Great news! Montana’s lone Congressman today introduced bills in the House to protect Yellowstone from mines and to protect Montana’s East Rosebud Creek from industry and dams.
Rep. Greg Gianforte (R-MT) introduced both the Yellowstone Gateway Protection Act and the East Rosebud Wild and Scenic Rivers Act in the House today. "The consensus of the community has been clear, which is why I introduced today's legislation," Gianforte stated in his press release on the Gateway Protection Act.
The move came after local business owners asked Rep. Gianforte for his help on the mining issue last month, and after prominent Montana newspapers called for Rep. Gianforte to act both to protect Yellowstone from mines and to protect East Rosebud.
We thank Rep. Gianforte for introducing both of these bills. They're both exactly what Montanans have asked for. And both these bills stand on their own merits, but they have a few things in common. Both of these bills:
- Have near-unanimous support from Montanans.
- Protect precious waters and healthy local economies in southwest Montana.
- Could be passed by the end of the year, because they're simple companion bills to Yellowstone and East Rosebud bills that have already been introduced in the Senate.
We'll be working tirelessly to make sure that these bills protecting Greater Yellowstone pass through Congress and are signed into law. GYC is the only organization in Montana and nationwide that works to protect both East Rosebud from dams and Yellowstone's gateway from risky gold mines. And we work with great partners on both issues, from Friends of East Rosebud and American Rivers, to the Yellowstone Gateway Business Coalition and Park County Environmental Council. Thank you for supporting our work!
