Wind River

Wind River

From its source high up on Togwotee Pass to where it turns into the Bighorn River at Thermopolis, the Wind River is alternately one of the prettiest and most abused rivers in the West. Much of the Wind River flows through the Wind River Indian Reservation, home to the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapahoe Indian tribes. Given a choice of where they could locate their reservation, the tribes chose the Wind River Valley due to its relatively warm winters and abundant fish and wildlife. The biggest threats to the Wind River come from the many dams and diversions that block fish passage, dump sediment into the river, and sometimes leave portions of the river completely dewatered in drought years. GYC is working with the Wind River Alliance, a cross-cultural watershed group, to address these issues and restore a more natural flow regime to the Wind River.
