Black Bear
Black Bear

The less-formidable cousin of the grizzly is still among the favored three or four animals for visitors to see in Yellowstone National Park. They are sometimes confused with grizzlies because many black bears are cinnamon in color. Black bears are less-frequently seen because they prefer forests, where they can put their curved claws to use climbing trees and foraging.

  • Black bears weigh between 135 and 315 pounds.
  • Males range up to 125 square miles.
  • Life expectancy is about 15-20 years.
