The State of Montana has moved to dismiss its lawsuit challenging Yellowstone National Park’s bison management plan which ends a baseless legal fight that threatened to undermine more than two decades of progress managing one of America’s most iconic wildlife populations.

Yellowstone National Park Superintendent Cam Sholly is leaving his post after nearly eight years leading the world’s first national park. 

A 2026 Montana state-wide survey shows that Montanans want to see wild lands and waters protected for generations to come.

In February 2026, we witnessed the largest-ever rehoming of Yellowstone bison to tribes. In all, 213 healthy bison – or buffalo – made the 470-mile journey from the park to Fort Peck.

Conserving the vast Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem often starts small. It begins with a conversation, a question, or the spark of an idea that grows into something much larger. That’s exactly what happened to Idaho sixth grader Olivia Nance. What started as a school research project on bison turned into a heartfelt effort that raised nearly $400 to support their conservation. 

What we’ve learned over the last four decades, and even more acutely understood in just the last few years, is that conserving a place as big as Greater Yellowstone starts small. Conservation of this beloved region begins first in conversations with friends, stakeholders, and neighbors. It’s working together with all people to build home-grown solutions that protect iconic wildlife, our public lands, and the cold, clean waters that are the lifeblood of Greater Yellowstone. And it turns out that when we work together, we’re greater.

GYC launches public lands protection campaign.

On November 7, 2024, the Wyoming State Board of Land Commissioners with a 3-2 vote approved the sale of the 640-acre Kelly Parcel to Grand Teton National Park. The $100 million sale will benefit Wyoming public schools and ensure this spectacular piece of land is public for Wyomingites and visitors to enjoy.

As news spreads that Grizzly bear 399 was struck and killed by a vehicle this week in Wyoming, it’s worth pausing to recognize how a single bruin in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem made such an impact on how people connect with the species.  

GYC was selected alongside Wild Montana and Gallatin Valley Land Trust to benefit from the two-day Wildlands Music Festival created by Outlaw Partners.

GYC and the WYldlife Fund teamed up to raise $2.7 million in donations to help keep people safe and wildlife alive along U.S. Highway 26 in Wyoming. This substantial fundraising effort will strengthen the state’s application as it competes for highly competitive federal grant funds.
