Senator Tester announces intent to introduce the groundbreaking Montana Headwaters Legacy Act
On October 27, 2020, Montana Senator Jon Tester held a press event to announce he will be introducing the Montana Headwaters Legacy Act into the U.S. Senate in November 2020. The Montana Headwaters Legacy Act protects 336 miles of some of the wildest rivers in Montana as Wild and Scenic Rivers.

Montana Supreme Court holds appeal hearing on an unlawful gold exploration permit
On September 30, 2020, the Montana Supreme Court heard oral arguments in our case challenging the validity of a gold exploration permit just north of Yellowstone National Park. The permit holders, Lucky Minerals Inc., and the agency responsible, the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), appealed our 2018 victory in a Montana District Court that vacated the DEQ permit for not fully considering the environmental impacts to wildlife habitat, water quality, and public lands.
GYC wraps up 4 years of public feedback on Custer Gallatin Forest’s new management plan
In September 2020, the Greater Yellowstone Coalition and many of its supporters submitted their final feedback to the Custer Gallatin National Forest on their new Forest Management Plan. This milestone concludes years of our collaboration, public engagement, and expert recommendations to help equip the National Forest with the strongest plan possible.

Funding in place for four crossings in Teton County, Wyoming
The Teton County Commission voted this week to put $3 million of Special Purpose Excise Tax (SPET) funds toward two wildlife crossings near the Snake River on Highway 22 outside of Jackson, Wyoming.

Celebrating against destructive mining
As we all focus on staying healthy and safe with our loved ones, it’s important to remember the ecosystem, and the threats to it, continues to function. The Greater Yellowstone Coalition has been fighting inappropriate gold mines our entire existence. It’s in our DNA. GYC continues to work on new solutions to the persistent problems created by our nation’s antiquated laws that obligate hard rock mining as be “the highest and best use” of the land.
Federal court throws out Kilgore Project approval
A U.S. District Court in Boise, Idaho decided that an international mining company Excellon Resources Inc. cannot move forward with the Kilgore Project until the U.S. Forest Service issues a new decision.
